A Property Manager’s Guide to Dealing with Wasps

South Tampa Wasp Nest on Home ExteriorYou are probably one of the many people who hate stinging insects. For South Tampa rental property owners, tackling wasps is a serious safety issue as well. Although wasps have a somewhat exaggerated reputation for aggressiveness, a single wasp sting can lead to hazards that range from allergic reactions to being attacked by an entire swarm. This can also happen when you disturb a wasp nest. Potential wasp problems on your rental property are best dealt with immediately and correctly. To address your wasp issue, here are some options. Pick one that seems appropriate to how grave your wasp problem has become.

Above anything else, you should keep wasps away from your rental property. Knowing where wasps like to make nests will greatly help you. You can also then take steps to keep them away. Look for protected nooks and crannies around your rental property. Wasps like to build nests under the eaves, in a shed, or inside a wall. Remember that wasps also nest in trees as well as in the ground.

Wasp repellents applied on our property’s exterior surfaces may also keep wasps away from your property. Studies show that some essential oils are effective at keeping wasps at bay. In particular, a mixture of clove, geranium, and lemongrass essential oils sprayed around eaves, ledges, and crevices can keep wasps away.

Keep your property free from wasps by sealing off trash bins and cracks around windows and doors. Like most creatures, wasps stay near abundant food sources. Examples of these are exposed to trash or compost mounds. Keep wasps away from your rental property by reminding your tenants to keep their garbage bins closed. Tell them to avoid composting as well. You can also keep wasps out of interior spaces by regularly checking for and sealing up cracks, holes, or other entry points in the exterior.

As you are sealing up possible entry points, you must also check for wasps that might already be inside. If you see wasps buzzing around, try your hardest to trace them back to the source. As long as their nests are still there, killing individual wasps won’t do you any good. Should you be able to locate a small wasp nest, you have to deal with it right away. Leaving the nest alone would only make your problem worse. Mix dish soap and water and spray this mixture on the nest and the wasps. This method has been proven to be effective. Because of the soap, the wasps won’t be able to breathe, thus freeing your property from them. You can also use sprays manufactured for killing individual wasps or draw them far away from the house by means of a baited trap.

These methods are generally effective for small numbers of wasps. However, for large nests, you need a different solution. Do not try to remove a large nest by yourself. Never hit or knock down a wasp nest. You can never be certain if there aren’t any wasps inside. Spraying it with water or burning it won’t help either. Both are awful ideas. Disturbing a wasp nest will result in an angry swarm of stinging insects that will attack you and anyone else nearby. If there is a large nest on your property, tell your tenants to stay away from it, then have a professional deal with it right away. Although wasps seldom attack if left alone, they can cause serious injury or even death when provoked. Knowing these risks, calling a professional would be the safest way to get rid of wasps.
